The year was 1994, based on this video I was convinced that Live was a more important/”serious” band than Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, or anything else I had managed to sneak a peak at on MTV. I was 10 years old, a lot has changed.

A: Those books are balls. I hate them. I never give a shit about what a song is supposed to be about. I’m never amused by misheard lyrics, either. I tend to be more interested in people who hear lyrics correctly and still get them wrong. Like, are you familiar with the first song on Teenage Fanclub’s ‘Bandwagonesque’? They open that record with this great song called “The Concept,” and its first two lines are “She wears denim where ever she goes / Says she’s gonna get some records by the Status Quo.” When I initially heard that song, it never occurred to me that they were talking about the band Status Quo. ‘Cause who the fuck listens to Status Quo? I always assumed that line meant this girl was buying records by the “the status quo,” which implied that she was buying all the records that scenesters felt an obligation to own. I thought she was buying records by Captain Beefheart and Gang of Four and Slick Rick. That’s what I thought the term ‘bandwagonesque’ referred to—jumping on the bandwagon of something that isn’t even popular. Every time I learn the truth about something, I’m disappointed.”

I thought the exact same thing, and more importantly, the last line rings very true.

(also I don’t really get the random Q & A’s that appear between each essay. No context is given and I can’t figure out if they are fragments from interviews he has given or conducted. The Rural Alberta Advantage - “Drain The Blood”

The video seems to be an homage to “The Conversation”, and the music seems to either be directly influenced by Neutral Milk Hotel or be striking a very similar chord by accident. This is to say that I just listened to the entire album and would say it’s the best discovery thus far from the “Best of 2009” listicles that are beginning to be posted around the nether regions of the net.

Japandroids - Young Hearts Spark Fire

While everything on the album puts The White Stripes two-person rock band mystique to shame, this song just really fits everything that is awesome about rock n roll. It is both of the times, with chaos and rock, and of a far off dream land, with it’s lyrics of “sunshine girls”, just like with healthcare, Canadians know best.

Say what you will about Pitchfork, mostly that they are a bunch of pretentious jerks who wear American Apparel and think they are smarter than you, they also almost always get it right if there’s a “big new thing”.

I’m not saying Girls reinvents the wheel, or that a lot of the stuff they claim is great doesn’t give me a headache, but I can’t think of a band in at least the last 5 years that they didn’t claim was great, way ahead of the curve. Plus I’m getting old at an alarming rate, I’d already say there aren’t many people in my life who would casually mention I should listen to this, that wasn’t the case a couple years ago.

That was easily the worst I’ve seen, it’s hard to believe it even happened. It’s also hard to argue that’s “why we lost” to an average fan who doesn’t understand the value of saving pitches for an ace like Lester.

The “Up In The Air” trailer is unbelievable, and is so good it could be a short film.

I could not have been more excited to see a movie than after I saw this, however, after learning that this speech is (spoiler alert) the end of the movie, and seeing the now, far more lame new trailer. I’m less enthused but still holding on to some hope.
