The new Best Coast album is pretty good but I really wish I could watch them play it with 10 other freaked out people in the Beverly Center Bloomingdales like I saw them two years ago. Still one of the most surreal shows ever.
Having a really hard time understanding why Dead Man’s Bones works so well. It seems like something that should be met with a serious dose of cynicism. Children in zombie make-up + A-list Hollywood actor living out rock n roll fantasy = awesome live show? I wouldn’t think so but, it most certainly was. Their set was the standout of FYF and you could tell even in the way the strict set times were extended by a few minutes for them. That they ended a set of really flawless music, with having the adorable “Billy The Kid Zombie” smash a guitar and win a trophy bigger than him for his costume was awesome. (Although really “Shirley Temple Zombie” definitely deserved consideration for the trophy).
Oh and overall thoughts on FYF, seriously, they need about 5 times as many food trucks and water stands. Also they need some sound guys who aren’t stoned all day. I’m not sure a single band on the Oak Stage didn’t have some sort of problem, Mountain Goats had no idea no one could here them for their first song, and Wavves spent almost their entire set bitching about not being able to hear their bass. Although honestly I think Wavves schtick is to complain and act like a spoiled brat. Overall the fest was amazing, can’t believe how much awesome music I saw, also can’t believe parking cost as much as a ticket, or that I ate another Denny’s Fried Cheese Melt last night.
